Traditions in our home.
Again I saw this on a friends blog and thought it was a great idea to be able to look back on and see what traditions we do while my kids are young. So we can see what we still do and what ones we have changed as the kids have gotten older...1. Birthday Donuts - Ever birthday we do donuts in bed. We use to do breakfast in bed but I cook breakfast a lot for them so it actually didn't seem super special, we never eat donuts so one day we decided to try it out and the tradition just stuck. I usually run to the store late the night before or super early the day of their birthday.
2. Happy & Sad. Each night since I can remember I tuck the kids in bed, Daddy sings them a song and I ask them what made them happy and sad for that day. The kids love this tradition and even though sometimes it's nothing more than everything; sometimes it has brought on some great conversation and teaching experiences for me to give to them of how they could have handled a situation different, or what to do when they were being bullied, or dealing with a mean friend. I have loved this tradition and know it is one I want to do for as long as they'll let me!
3. Family home evening- we are actually pretty good at doing something every monday night together, it isn't alway a traditional FHE, sometimes it's just playing a board game, or watching a movie, inviting another family over for dinner, or going to the park, but almost every monday we are doing something together as a family!
4. Game/movie nights. We also generally once a week either one night of the weekend or Sunday night have a movie night or play games. We do board games, like Sorry, Uno, Apples to Apples, Charades, or my kids favorite is hide n' seek {sometimes in the winter they love when it's in the dark and we keep all the lights turned out} we hide throughout the whole house and it's pretty fun!
5. Date nights. We do Mommy/daughter dates and daddy/daughter dates; we rotate and try to each do a date each month with one of the kids. Even Nannie joined in and did Grandma/grandkid dates and took them shopping. Our Parent/kid dates have included sushi night {Emma/Dad}, Menchie's {Chloe}, We've done dinner, lunches, movie's, shopping, whatever the kid wants to do on their date. With 5 kids we know we need to make sure they each have their time with us and try to use them as a great way to talk and teach!
6. Bake together. I often ask one of the kids if they want to bake something yummy with me. They love to have their turn pouring in all the ingredients and helping make something good. I love just being with them!
7. Reading at night. We just started reading to them at night. Right now we are reading Harry Potter, if we aren't reading them a book then after we tuck them in they get to stay up and read for 15-20 minutes. Reading is so important and we love that they enjoy it too!
8. Family Prayers. We try to every night kneel together as a family. It use to be kind of torturous to get them to quickly come and say prayers, and so I started a fun tradition where Tom or I say family prayers, and whoever is on their knees first says "first one on my knees" then 2nd, 3rd, etc. A little competition gets us all their pretty quick. especially cause Tom and I try to beat them too it! We aren't as good at saying them in the mornings but we really try!
9. Scripture reading. We try to do this everyday. We use to do it during school, Tom would read while I made and got everyone breakfast but know his schedule is all crazy and he goes to work a lot early somedays so it know happens at night right before readying time.
**Our daily schedule after Tom gets home is
Dinner
Clean-up
One or 2 of these:
Going to the park
Watching a show or movie
Playing a game
Going on a walk
Talking outside with our awesome neighbors
scriptures/FHE on Monday's}, then reading time, Bed time.
What are some of your favorite traditions??
